"Bowsprit" Limited Edition Poster, 16"x19"
“Bowsprit” was captured by Alison Langley in Smith Cove near Castine, Maine, during the annual Schooner Gam, an informal gathering of the Maine Windjammer fleet. The net and whiskers of a bowsprit frame the schooner Spirit of Massachusetts.
Spirit of Massachusetts replicates the fast and able fishing schooners of the late 19th century that sailed to the North Atlantic fishing ground for rich harvests of cod. Modeled after the Gloucester fishing schooner “Fredonia”, designed by Edward Burgess in 1889, Spirit of Massachusetts was built for service as a sail training ship. Today she sails under the flagship of Ocean Classroom Foundation, an educational organization that provides programs of sea education and adventure for the youth of America aboard their fleet of schooners.
